Rotted Foorboards On Ground Floor

On entry to the return, there was severe rot in all the floorboards. They were soft, brittle and decaying into the earth below.

So I cut back all the boards to where they became more stable. This also allows the ground level to be dropped a few inches allowing more headroom on entry to the return.

This is far from finished, I started the job without a shovel or access to the garden, so a good deal of this soil is still to be removed.

  1. What the heck - who on earth in their right mind would place a wood floor right on top of the raw earth? I'm no building but even I have learned from watching lots of "building off the grid" type shows on HGTV and DIY Networks (LOL!) that you just do not do that. Even the pioneers built the most primitive of log shelters on top of rocks/stones gathered to make a "sort of" foundation to get the wood OFF of the ground so it wouldn't suck in moisture. Holy Hathor. So maybe this also answers a question I had about where all the piled-up dirt came from the back yard - you dug it out of this hallway and the "return." Wondering why it's not called a wing or an addition.
